One of the great curses in technology is that, if you’ve ever built a content management system, especially a blogging tool, you can never stop building better ones in your head, even though the actual products in reality never get any better. Here @… falls down the rabbit hole again.

I interviewed a guy last week for a senior Rust position.
Whenever I asked any question, he would go, let me think ... 30-60 seconds pass .. give a perfect answer.
So I started asking questions wayyy out of syllabus.
Q: What is the rope data structure?
A: (gives perfect answer)
Q: What is packratt parsing?
A: (ditto)
Q: Ooh so have you done compiler dev?
A: Yes, I have done Rust and Python.
Q: Which parsing algorithm did you use for it?

Finally discovered why my one-shot could detect birds but my streaming code using the same ML model could not.

The answer, and this should not surprise anyone, is that I am an idiot.

One-shot code had "bird" hardcoded in its "wanted classes" list. Streaming code took that list from command line arguments and, yes, I am an idiot, and no, I didn't put those in the driver script for the streaming detector.

Fixed now and just detected a (slightly …

Dear LazyWeb, Bit of a long shot here. I'm replacing a bog-standard 5T disk in my bog-standard Synology DS416j and seem to have lost the package of screws that came with the thing. Having trouble figuring out exactly what the right kind of replacement screws is required to fasten the disk in the tray. Thought I had, but it's not really locked down, and vibrates. Anyone know the right answer?

42 ... is not the answer to everything but the hours that have passed since the last (and only moderately detailled) update on the status of and crucial communications effort with #Odysseus on the Moon - not good given the total lifetime of the lander of one week in the best case: almost three of these days have now passed. To ease our nerves here are some #snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) pictures I just took in my neighborhood in #Bochum, Germany ...

For the people who care about #5g stuff here, apparently my phone can do pretty well on mmW. This is downtown Austin last night, on 400 MHz of AT&T n260 (38 GHz), anchored by 10 MHz of B5 LTE. Latency isn't great, but throughout is.

This is very depressing… so much time wasted…
At least the second best time to act is now… but I had to write an appointment on a cloud based server or I will forget.

The image is a timeline with three marked points. The first point is labeled “1776,” with a note stating “James Watt develops a steam engine that helps kick off the Industrial Revolution.” The second point is labeled “1896,” with a note stating “Arvid Högbom and Svante Arrhenius note that industrial activity is adding CO2 to the atmosphere, and calculate how much the Earth will heat up if the CO2 concentration doubles. Their answer closely matches modern estimates.” The third point is labeled “…

I kinda hate how much my previous experiences have changed the way I behave.
Sometimes I think of a legit question to a post but can't write it in a way that doesn't seem contradictory to the post, so I just won't reply.
This is because many previous experiences tell me that replying in a way that seems even remotely contradictory, will get me nothing but insults and no actual answer to the question.
Also the fact that I've been blocked many times before (including by Fedi admins) without warning or discussion, leaves me thinking "is this something someone might have blocked me for in the past? And should I post it?" 🤦‍♂️
The amount of people who are hostile to simple replies is too damn high...😩
